Forensic Interviews
A verbal child is provided a one-on-one interview to obtain accurate information. This is provided considering the cognitive development and emotional needs of the child by a trained interviewer. The interview is monitored by those professionals involved in the investigation. Information is also obtained from the caregiver accompanying the child prior to the interview.
TEDI BEAR’s forensic interviewers are trained to understand how children of different ages think, feel, and communicate. The interview takes place in a comfortable, child-friendly room that contains drawing materials and other materials to help the child describe his or her experiences.
Also, the interview is recorded so that the child will not be required to unnecessarily revisit memories of abuse as the evaluation moves forward. This helps to reduce the distress that families often experience. The interviewer may also assist with the child’s medical evaluation.
Information obtained in the interview is routinely shared with the TEDI BEAR medical providers who are involved in the child’s evaluation.
