Multidisciplinary Teams

MDT MeetingNot all of TEDI BEAR’s work takes place within our Greenville Center. We also work closely with Multidisciplinary Teams (“MDTs”) throughout eastern North Carolina to help ensure that child abuse is effectively addressed at the local level. MDTs are made up of professionals from law enforcement, social services, healthcare providers, court systems, and other organizations that cooperate on investigating alleged abuse, helping victims and families who are recovering, and preventing abuse from occurring.

Currently, TEDI BEAR works with MDTs in Bertie, Beaufort, Edgecombe, Greene, Halifax, Lenoir, Martin, Pitt, Wayne, and Wilson counties. Each team meets in its home community on a regular basis to help ensure a coordinated approach to the complex medical, social, and legal problems associated with child abuse and neglect.

The MDT’s goals include the wellbeing of children, the strength of families, the successful prosecution of offenders, and the confidentiality of private information. If there is no Multidisciplinary Team in your county and you would like to help start one, a good first step is to read the U.S. Department of Justice’s brief publication on Forming a Multidisciplinary Team to Investigate Child Abuse (PDF).
